5 Fictional Characters That Helped Save Me

Entertainment Weekly recently released their 50 most powerful Superheroes so I thought it would be perfect to write about the 5 fictional characters that had a hand in saving me in my darkest time and were my own personal superheroes. These were the characters that I wanted to wake up to every day and see what kind of adventure and issues they could go through and still conquer. These were the strong characters that inspired me to keep fighting my mental illness.

5.) Meredith Grey (Grey’s Anatomy)

Meredith is one of the strongest and smartest doctors on television. Not to mention she has escaped death about 4 billion times. Drowning, an explosion, a gunman and a plane crash later she is still going strong. She has endured everything life has thrown at her and still finds it worth living. Family is one of the most important things to her and being loyal to them is her main priority. She fiercely protects them at all costs no matter the consequence. Her monologues at the beginning and the end of each episode inspire me the most.  Her drive to keep going even in the darkest of times makes her one of my top five.

4.) Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)

Who doesn’t like a badass witch? The .001% can put their hands down. Hermione is not only brilliant but she is strong. From day one she was ready for anything with her book smarts. Her loyalty to Harry and Ron is most admirable but the thing that I love most about her is that she didn’t let herself being different hold her back. Being a Mudblood in the magical world allowed for others to call her names and beat her down. Those things may have hurt her, but they only made her stronger. Lastly, its LevIOsa not LevioSA.7kdvxp3

3.) Santana Lopez (Glee)

Being queer isn’t the only interesting thing about her. Santana is an amazing singer and one of the greatest characters on Glee due to her vicious vicious words. Santana wasn’t afraid of what anyone thought about her and even if they were stupid enough to voice their opinion against her, she had the best monologues to tear them down. I love her singing and every time I am feeling a little blue I pull out my phone and listen to “Valerie” on repeat. And yes, most of my iTunes is full of Glee covers. Her bravery is outstanding and her drive to be happy is something I will always admire.

2.) Scott McCall (Teen Wolf)

Being the only male on my short list Scott is one of my favorite werewolves. Taylor Lautner does not count. Scott is a true alpha, which means you evolve into greatness and without having to steal it. You are also pure because you have never taken a life. Piercing red eyes give you the power to lead your own pack. He has an amazing pack of friends that he will do anything and everything for. I cherish how strong he is, his honesty and his ability to stay humble through all his challenges. He knows even the strongest of enemies will never beat him because the power of love within his friends and family is stronger.

1.) Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Buffy has always been my ideal heroine. She is witty, smart and strong. She may hate being the chosen one but she is the best choice. Her speech in “Chosen” is by far one of my favorite speeches in the entire series. Like Scott, she has always put her friends and family first and done anything to protect them even sacrificing her own life by jumping into a portal that was opening the word up to evil. She is brave and courageous beyond belief and will never turn away from a fight. I wanted to be as cool as her every single day of my childhood. Although my mother never allowed me to carve a stick into a stake and call it ” Mr. Pointy” Buffy will continue to be the most influential character to keep me inspired.

I wanted to be like these characters. I still do. Every time I want to give up I would remember them. If they can fight Lord Voldemort, kill the first evil or win a Glee national title being the underdog, I could certainly do anything.
