Mental health is getting the royal treatment.
The Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge are once again on the path to helping others who suffer from mental illness. They are launching a 10 part film series through their mental health campaign Heads Together.
Prince Harry who will also be helping on the project which will have videos labeled, #OKToSay that stresses the importance of speaking up for mental health and encouraging more people to open up and start discussions with mental health.
The royals released a statement about their film campaign reading, “Attitudes to mental health are at a tipping point. We hope these films show people how simple conversations can change the direction of an entire life. Please share them with your friends and families and join us in a national conversation on mental health in the weeks ahead.”
They launched the films days prior to World Health Day that also focuses on mental health. The videos mainly focus on people talking about the mental health issues that they suffer from and accepting them. Others highlight people talking to loved ones and family about their mental health for the very first time.
More than 300 million people worldwide suffer from a mental health condition, but nearly half of them don’t seek out treatment. Studies have shown that some of the reasons people do not find treatment are due to the fear that they will be shamed by peers and family. Kate, William, and Harry aim to change this. Talking about and normalizing mental health can change the stigma surrounding mental illness. With advocates like the royal family, one day the statistics will change.
